SAVE OUR
SAHYADRI (SOS)
People’s initiative
in protecting wilderness and eco-systems
in Tamhini- Mulshi area
Rich in biodiversity and natural resources
Tamhini-Mulshi area (towards north-west
of Pune) is facing tremendous pressure
due to uncontrolled tourism. Come
monsoon and huge number of two wheelers
and four wheelers turn towards Tamhini
- Mulshi to enjoy natural places and
wilderness. There was no harm in doing
so till it came to ruining streams
by plastic waste or snatching orchids
from trees to bring them for home
gardens. There is a list of such exploitative
acts that is damaging the quality
and richness of nature in Mulshi.
Ignorance about its ecological value
is one reason people do such exploitation.
Many a times just by giving proper
information tourists withdraw from
such abusive activities and even show
interest in conservation of nature.
Installing informative signage
in Mulshi
So, with all this background, oikos
took initiative to install signage
in the area with a specific theme
for awareness amongst visitors.
This year, as a part of SOS (Save
Our Sahyadri), four informative signage
has been installed on Pune –
Kolad highway with the help of local
resort owners and villagers. This
total activity is sponsored by Rotary
Club of Poona West and conceptualized
by oikos. The plan ahead is to install
more such signage to educate people
about the worth of these mountains.
