Celebrating
101st Year of Rotary International |

Rotary Club of
Pune Shivajinagar conducts a unique Literacy
project
(Giving eVision to Blind students)
|
| |
 |
|
Knowledge of computers
and IT literacy is a necessity in
21st century. IT literacy is a basic
skill needed for any job now. While
as many of us working on building
skills of normal children in these
competencies, we also need to work
on special children. Even Blind minds
can have eVision which will |
|
make them self sufficient and make
them stand on their own feet. Organisations
like Rotary have to help blind children.
We at Rotary Club of Pune Shivajianagar
have take this as a task. We located
Vidyarthi Sahayak Samiti an organization
working on supporting blind and special
children. |
“Service
above self” the Rotary theme
was aptly justified when Rotary Club
of Pune Shivajinagar donated a Personal
computer, dragon software for blind
(which converts data to speech) and
10 computer books written in Brail.
This has helped 10 blind children
to be IT literate. In the next 3 years,
this number will grow to 100. IT professionals
from our club will also spare their
time to educate the blind children. |

signal timers
|

Waiting vehicles,
big queues at peak hours, polluting
emissions is the common sight at most
busy signals in Pune. Computerised
Digital Signal timer at signal displays
the time for Red signal and permits
the vehicle owners to shut down the
vehicle. |
|
This directly reduces pollution and
helps preserve environment. Tukaram
Paduka Chowk is a busy square with
3 signals on Fergussan College Road.
Rotary Club of Pune Shivajinagar has
installed Digital signal timers on
all 3 signals to help reduce pollution
in 3 directions. This was inaugurated

of Pune Municipal Corpotartion. |

| Appeal
for Volunteers to serve in Niger from Nicholas
Mancus - Chair Water/Health |
|
Hunger Task Force D9100, Zone 10B Cotonou,
Benin |
| The
following is a plea for help from
our member in Benin: |
Dear
Fellow Members of HSRF,
I am the Water/Hunger/Health Task
Force Chair for D9100, a district
that covers 14 countries in West Africa
including Niger. Many of you may know
that Niger experienced an acute famine,
and thousands of children have already
died. We need your help in order to
assist in doing what we Rotarians
can to save as many human lives as
possible. Just yesterday, I got another
report of a second wave of dying,
malnourished babies in the Agadez
region of Niger.
More than anything right now, we need
Rotary volunteers to come to Niger
to work. Niger has just been ranked
as the world's poorest country by
UNDP. The needs are tremendous; the
situation is dire.
We are in the process of coordinating
volunteer requests and solicitations
with RI. Our appeal for Niger is being
placed on the WCS website. RI has
a data base of potential volunteers
that they are contacting to fit immediate
needs.
I thought that some of you may know
people who would be interested in
immediate Rotary volunteer needs.
Here are some of the immediate
needs: Surgeons and surgeons assistants,
medical doctors and nurses
to run and staff a constructed and
equipped butstaff-less hospital in
Loga, Niger (a regional capital);
Nutritionists to
work in UNICEF sponsored feeding camps
in all 12 provinces of Niger and to
serve in advisory capacities; people
with professional experience in vaccination
campaigns in order to assist in the
management and operations of the enlarged
vaccination program in all provinces
of Niger. Additional immediate needs
include youth group leaders and people
with experience in women's development
groups for the establishment and promotion
of income generating projects via
sustainable food production.
All positions are in conjunction with
UN agencies that have solicited urgent
assistance from the Niger Rotary Crisis
Committee.
Some positions come with UN logistical
support -- usage of project vehicles
and office space at the regionalUN
offices in Niger.
All positions come with basic housing
provisions based on an agreement between
UN agencies and the Niger Rotary Crisis
Committee. There are no provisions
to pay per diem, travel to Niger,
nor other expenses in Niger by the
Niger Rotary Crisis Committee nor
the UN agencies involved in Niger
for Rotary Volunteers. All sources
of funding for this must be found
outside if required. All volunteers
are requested to agree to come for
a period of between 3 and 6 months.
Level 3 French is preferable as Niger
is a French speaking country.
Once primary needs are filled, people
with experience in administration
and pharmacy will be required.
With this email, I would like to especially
ask the assistance of all fellow members
of the Humanitarian Service Resource
Fellowship in finding appropriate
volunteers for this urgent need. We
are aware of the lists of volunteer
agencies placed on our fellowship
website, and many are already working
in Niger.
However, significant additional support
is needed at this time beyond what
those non-Rotarian agencies are doing.
Working conditions are very difficult
in Niger. Extreme hardship conditions
should be expected by anyone interested.
I would prefer that serious inquiries
be addressed to me privately at my
email address: nicholas_mancus@yahoo.com
I thank you for any help that any
Rotarian can afford in filling this
urgent need.
Regards,
Nicholas Mancus

Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea,

Rotarians Disaster
relief activity, as rains create havoc in
various parts of Maharashtra. |
 |
|
Dear
Rotary Friends and Leaders
As we all are aware of the regular monsoon
becoming a disaster this year taking with
it lives of thousands of children, adults
and animals, leaving our districts as open
graveyards, which were full of life until
a couple of days.It
is very unnerving to even imagine a rainfall
of over 1 meter on one day, and it has been
constant since many days now. |
| |
|
The most affected areas are from our District
3130 and they are-
1) Revenue District of Raigad: Mahad,
Goregaon, Mangaon,Patalganga,Panvel.
2) Satara – Patan, Karad
3) Nanded
These are some of the worst affected places
that are severely damaged due to heavy and
continous rains. The trauma does not end
here as these places have experienced major
landslides that has devastated the whole
land. |
| |
|
|
| |
|
People
who are alive are homeless and have no place
to go.Many children are without parents
and many parents are without their children
as they are not aware whether they are dead
or are missing. People who have survived
the disaster are facing equally grave problems
like Food, drinking water to survive. They
are surrounded by dead human bodies, dead
animal bodies which need to be cleared as
fast as possible because no sooner will
there be a spread of various diseases due
to the unhygienic conditions. There is no
electricity since one whole week or more,
leaving people to live in hell.It is completely
a nerve wrecking situation. There is no money
and no clothes for the affected as everything
is washed out. |
| |
|
|
| |
|
 |
|
Many
have lost their earning sources, as water
level has managed to damage all the fields,
Shops are shattered, business centers are
left with only hopes of any restructure. It
is a total blackout situation. The current
status shows very limited Government support
and the Insurance status is not very positive
as well. |
| |
|
Many
of our Rotarian friends have lost their
homes and belongings due to this natural
disaster.
I therefore submit to you the information
and request an appeal for help to effectively
handle this disturbing situation.
