Dr. Mahesh Kotbagi
Rtn. Dr. Mahesh Kotbagi
District Governor RID 3130
(2005-06)
Rotary has completed hundred years of service and we are standing at the threshold of a new century. We are proud of our legacy and are confident to take challenges of a coming century. We are really fortunate and glad, as we are going to write Rotary’s first chapter of a new century and perhaps the reason is a person who is going to lead our District 3130 into the new century. The person, symbol of dynamism and enthusiasm is none other than DG. Rtn. Dr. Mahesh Kotbagi!
There was a time when, average age of a person joining Rotary was around forty to fifty. Today, Dr. Mahesh has achieved the honour and distinction of becoming the youngest District Governor of our Rotary District 3130. And if you look at his entire career you will realize that just at the age of thirty-eight his achievements are simply spellbinding.
Gifted with immense intelligence, Dr. Mahesh has had an illustrious academic career that culminated in becoming a full-fledged Doctor with M.D. in Gynecology and obstetrics from Pune University. He won a Gold Medal for his research paper. Dr. Mahesh is a Medical Doctor by profession and a meticulous planner. Dr. Mahesh also works as a Hon. Professor for several Medical Colleges and was a member of Pune University Senate. He was the youngest member to work on Senate and was University Representative for more than 6 years during his entire college studentship.

Rtn Dr. Mahesh started his100 bedded Kotbagi Hospital during 1991, in Aundh Area of Pune. It is a multi-specialty unit, with modern diagnostic infrastructure, supported by state of the art communication facilities. This happens to be the first ISO 9001-2000 certified hospital in Pune. Rtn Dr. Mahesh is also the Chairman of Kotbagi Institute of Hospital Management which is recognised by University Of Pune.
Being a true Rotarian, Dr. Mahesh considers ‘Service above Self’ as a guiding philosophy of his life. In spite of achieving enviable professional status, he has been keen in fulfilling his commitment to the community. He serves as a Hon. Secretary of 300 bedded H V Desai Eye Hospital, which performs more than hundred free eye surgeries, every day, for the benefit of poor and needy. He has also been the Hon. Secretary of Poona Blind Men’s Association and Founder Trustee of Ashta Nokai Foundation, Japan based NGO’s ‘Women Literacy Centre’ in Pune, as well as Kolumbus Ambulance which deploys a fleet of 20 Ambulances. He is also a Chairman of Chinmayi Medical Foundation.
Rtn. Mahesh has an equally illustrious track record in Rotary. He joined Rotary Club of Pune Sports City in 1995 as a Charter Member. He served as Secretary of the club and ably participated in all different committees as chairman. He was President of the club in the year 1998-99. He excelled in almost every club activity. As per the Principle in Management, ‘Work always flows to someone who completes it’, he was invited to take up many new assignments at the District Level. He worked as a Counselor for IYE Incoming Students, District Chairman for International RYLA, Co-Convener of Dist. Assembly which was attended by more than 1100 Delegates from every corner of RID 3130. He also served as GGR, GSR, and District Secretary (Programs). He has attended Rotary Conventions, Institutes, R.I.Convention, Rotaract and IYE meets.
A popular figure in Rotary Movement, Rtn Dr. Mahesh has visited several clubs as a speaker both in India and abroad. He has visited many countries including USA, JAPAN, UK, Australia, Mexico, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Canada, Hawaii and Nepal. He promoted Rotary Friendship Exchange Program with RID 2620 in Japan and visited them as a Team Leader. He is also a Rotary Volunteer and has served overseas. He was decorated with RI Four Avenue of Service Citation Award.

Mahesh’s father, a Medical Doctor by profession and mother, Doctor of Philosophy envisioned their son, being academically sound, a successful professional, and yet a social worker at heart and a good human being. Their dream, certainly, came true. Mahesh fulfilled their every aspiration. Mahesh’s wife Rtn. Dr. Amita also fulfilled his expectations in life in every possible way. Once a childhood friend she became his life partner. Amita also is a Doctor by profession. Validating the meaning of the term ‘Ardhangini’ she has been looking after several hospital chores along with Rtn. Dr. Mahesh and lighting his hectic burden and constraints. She has firmly stood by him along the way helping negotiate all twists and turns of life. Rtn. Dr. Mahesh and Rtn. Dr. Amita are blessed with two daughters, elder Chinmayi is twelve and younger one Sana is hardly two years of age.
Being an ardent admirer of nature, Rtn. Dr. Mahesh takes keen interest in outdoor sporting activities like hang gliding, parasailing, rifle/revolver shooting, horse riding, motorbike and car racing. His everlasting enthusiasm for photography and architecture has motivated him to travel to the far corners of the world. He enjoys resting on beaches, listening to Indian classical music, participating in Western dancing, savoring traditional Indian food as well as candlelight barbeque dinners. He is a true connoisseur of choicest things accessible in every walk of life.
Rtn. Dr. Mahesh is a superb blend of diverse attributes. He is a unique combination of youth and dynamism blended with modesty and maturity! This medical faculty looks so young that he still can glide by as a college student. Difficult to locate, when this District Governor is mingling among the crowd of Rotaractors! Whoever attended the recent District Conference experienced his incredible and unbelievable organisational capacity and youthful zest.
Here is a person who with all his talents and achievements is a sincere and trusted friend… in a nut shell… a Good Human being! He has been the most popular DG who has a habit of leading our District from the front on to the path of the next century!
